Retailers are always working a season (or more) ahead. Holiday preparations start during the summer months, spring styles arrive in winter, and brands start working on back to school before the previous school year even ends. As the spring and summer shopping seasons get in full swing, here are a few tips for retail store owners and small businesses to refresh store merchandising – and boost sales.
Before you revamp merchandising, take time to make a plan. Use your point of sale system to pull metrics and identify trends. Then, determine specific goals and actionable steps that will help you get there. Make sure you have the budget for all the parts of your plan (i.e. fixtures, signage, and staff to help you execute the design).
This is another step at which POS data will be useful. Identify products that are in high demand, as well as similar and complimentary items. Stage them prominently and in a way that will lead customers to more.
The checkout line is a great place to build sales and maximize the customer experience. Take advantage of this valuable real estate with smart merchandising.

Research shows that mirrors, when placed strategically throughout a store, can improve the customer experience. In addition, mirrors make small spaces look larger, which can help if you’re working with a tight area.
Use your point of sale data to monitor product and store performance, and adjust merchandising as needed through the season.
