How to Clean and Disinfect a POS System

April 6, 2020

As grocery and other retail stores continue to provide essential services to their communities, it’s vitally important that POS systems are frequently cleaned and disinfected, to protect both workers and customers from the spread of COVID-19. We have a few general tips and guidelines for how to clean point of sale systems and self-checkout hardware, courtesy of Toshiba.

An important note: Before applying any cleaning solution to your company’s POS hardware, it’s important to consult your user manual or manufacturer website. Follow the instructions specific to your point of sale system to avoid causing damage or voiding the warranty. When in doubt, contact the manufacturer or give Retail Tech a call.

How to Clean Point of Sale Systems

Toshiba recommends a spray solution of 90% isopropyl alcohol to clean its POS system hardware and self-checkout touchscreens. The solution can be used as often as needed without affecting the quality or longevity of the hardware.

To clean and disinfect, simply spray the cleaning solution onto a microfiber cleaning cloth or soft towel. The cloth should be damp, but not soaked. Then, wipe the surface to be cleaned.

You may leave the system powered on while cleaning, but log out of POS applications. However, before cleaning parts and surfaces that are not normally touched or interacted with, it may be a good idea to power the system down.

What Not To Do

Don’t spray cleaners directly onto equipment, and don’t soak electronic equipment with cleaning solution. Don’t use any abrasive powders or rough cleaning materials, such as scrub brushes.

This is a challenging and uncertain time for the retail and restaurant industries. If Retail Tech can be of any assistance now or in the future, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
