What is Unified Commerce?

July 9, 2020

And how can it help retail stores boost business in the new retail landscape?

The shift from physical retail toward e-commerce was well underway before 2020. But when the coronavirus pandemic hit, with store closures and stay home orders, the move to digital retail went full speed ahead. Now, as brick and mortar stores slowly reopen, unified commerce will become even more important to boost sales and satisfy customers.

What is Unified Commerce?

According to TotalRetail, unified commerce is the cross-channel integration of digital and physical retail. Perhaps more importantly, it is the understanding that different customers will have different needs and wants when it comes to their shopping experience, and the ability to meet them on their terms. This is even more essential to retail success in a post-covid world.

There are many possible scenarios within unified commerce. A customer might browse online but make their final decision in-store. Someone else might fully shop online, but pick items up in person to avoid shipping charges. Others shop completely online. There are many options, and it’s important to use data and digital payments to create a seamless experience for everyone. This will create a positive experience for customers, and ultimately boost sales.

Use Data to Tailor the Experience

Many consumers are willing to give personal data to retailers – as long as they get something in return. Consider offering a discount or promotional item in exchange for information. Then, use the data to understand purchasing behavior and tailor a shopping experience for each specific customer. A robust point of sale system will be an invaluable tool in implementing this customization.

Accept Digital Payments

Contactless payments are no longer optional. Retailers must be able to accept payment digitally, not just for convenience, but for safety. If your point of sale system isn’t capable of accepting digital payment, it may be time to upgrade.
